NEW:

Kindermusik Family Time - “MAKE WAY FOR MUSIC

.Newborn to 7 Years

Come and bring all the children to the same class! We'll play instruments together, dance together, share, and take turns, and see how music can bring you closer as a family.  This one-room schoolhouse approach to music allows for older children to show the little ones how it's done and the younger ones are eager to learn. Family Time is a multi-layered learning environment. Basic musical concepts are presented each week along with the instruments and the structured free time to put those concepts into play. Your children will listen to instruments and to each other, learn from their peers and older children, and enjoy music and movement with hoops, scarves and tumble-around play. Story time and family jams, puppet play and happy singing--all the Family Time activities encourage discovery and exploration and foster sharing and social skills too. In this special place for musical, social and emotional learning, your children will strengthen their ties with each other and with you-and they'll start developing the skills they'll need in school and on the neighborhood playground.

Kindermusik Family Time:  Thursdays 5:30 pm

In Make Way for Music, families will sing, dance, and move their way through an exploration of several elements of music: beat and rhythm, concepts and contrasts (such as staccato and legato, high and low, the major scale, and arpeggios), the human voice, instrument families, and ensemble. They’ll engage in developmentally appropriate activities that the whole family can enjoy together, including fingerplays, songs, circle dances, story time, and family jam.

Home Materials: Two books—Drum Circle and Animals on Parade, two Home CDs,  Family Guide, an instrument-matching board game and two fingerdrums.

Home Materials: A picture board book with charming farm animals and the sounds they make—Cock-a-doodle-Moo, a CD of the songs heard in class, a Sunshine Jingle instrument for music-making at home, and a set of Art Banners for the nursery wall.

DewDrops takes Baby and Parent/Caregiver into the middle of a flower garden, seeing the DewDrops glisten in the morning sun and feeling the cool breeze blow, a true multi-sensory experience! Varying styles of music are represented from the lively Celtic dance of the Belfast Hornpipe to the gentle, soothing melody of “Scarborough Fair.” Whether hammocking, dancing a jig, exploring a drum, singing a lullaby, or using a mirror in vocal play activities, Baby and Caregiver can celebrate the joys of music and their special relationship. Toys I Make, Trips I Take begns in a very remarkable toyshop filled with boats, drums, jack-in-the boxes, trains, and many other toys that bring a glimmer into the children's eyes. Later we explore the sea in a Big Blue Boat and in boats we “build” ourselves.

And then we take exciting train trips to exotic places.

While activities are centered on a child’s pretend play and imagination, Toys places a strong musical emphasis on singing, steady beat, and ensemble, as well as rhythm and rhythmic patterns. This unit introduces another musical concept - in which the beat gradually increases in pace -- accelerando. The music journey will focus on creating a stimulating musical environment that integrates music, pretend play, storytelling, movement and more.

Songs include such familiar ones as “A Sailor Went to Sea,” “Down By the Station,” and “Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay,” as well as Chinese, Israeli, Spanish, and French folk songs. You’ll also enjoy some new jazz arrangements and fiddle tunes. The featured instrument is the drum.  Your own Kindermusik drum and a variety of classroom drums will be prominent through listening and playing activities.

In addition to the specially designed drum, home materials include two literature books to facilitate language, listening, creative, and conversational skills, two CD’s, a home activity book, and an interactive Toy Shop play set.

Semester 1: for K and 1,TBA

Kindermusik for the Young Child is a sequential program with four 15-week semesters.

KinderPhotoYoungCh-1.JPG

The first year provides foundation for studying piano; the third and fourth are an introduction to string and wind instruments.

While each semester builds on the previous, there is sufficient review that new children may join in semesters two and three. Each semester continues to involve children in singing, listening, playing instruments, and moving expressively.

All "At Home" materials include a folder, attendance stickers, ID stickers, home DC, and family songbook. In addition there is the one-time purchase for semester one, of carry-bag and glockenspiel. And in semester three, the dulcimer kit; semester four, the recorder.

KinderPhotoYoungCh-1a.JPG Semester 1 broadens the child’s musical experience through the introduction of the glockenspiel. Basic rhythmic and pitch notation are explored through movement, games, and manipulatives.

Children also learn about percussion and brass instruments and are introduced to Mozart and some of his music, including The Magic Flute.

Semester 2 further develops the child’s instrument-playing skills while developing the greatest instrument of all—the voice! Concepts of piano/forte, crescendo/decrescendo, and legato/staccato are featured. Information about string and wind instruments is shared as well as an KinderPhotoYoungCh-4.JPGintroduction to Beethoven.

Peter and the Wolf provides an exciting introduction to the whole orchestra.

Pressure-free, developmentally appropriate concepts help effectively prepare children for formal music instruction after age seven.

Semester 3 introduces the dulcimer (a 2-string, corrugated cardboard instrument to assemble and decorate at home that has a remarkably fine sound.) Other concepts include call and response, improvisation, meter, further staff notation, and a touch of Tchaikovsky. Topics include the music of Appalachia, the sea, our Afro-American heritage, Native Americans, and the world of dance.

KinderPhotoYoungCh-3.JPG Semester 4 brings the sounds of wind through the playing of the recorder! Many new musical terms are learned, as well as all the notes of the C scale.
