Music & Choirs

Throughout the Christian story, music has played a key role in the expression of faith in the living God. Whether we offer praise from the pew, sing in a choir, or play a musical instrument, we have the opportunity to express our thanks and gratitude to the Christ who has triumphed gloriously for us.

kyle at organThrough music in our liturgies, we as the community of All Souls proclaim our corporate praise and unity as Christians gathered in one body. Participation in the Word both spoken and sung has the capacity to nourish and transform us into a people prepared to do God's reconciling work in the world.

All Souls parishioners and friends are invited to consider taking part in our cathedral music program by singing in one of our ensembles, playing a musical instrument, or by supporting the special services and concerts that occur throughout the year. Please take a few moments to review the opportunities that are listed here and consider your place in the ministry of music. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions.

Cathedral Choir

High school, college and adult singers are welcome.
Rehearsals: Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:00 p.m.
Sing: Sunday mornings at the 11:15 a.m. Eucharist.

The Cathedral Choir warmly invites anyone who enjoys singing to consider taking part. If interested, please call Kyle Ritter, Organist/Choirmaster, at church (274-2681).

The Cathedral Choir sings a rich and varied repertoire of choral music, from plainchant and Renaissance motets to anthems by contemporary composers. On occasion, the choir performs large-scale compositions with orchestra. Throughout the year there are special musical opportunities such as the All Souls Service and Taizé liturgies. Read about the Taizé Community and learn the songs.

All Souls Choir

Rehearsals: Thursday evenings, 6:30 - 7:15pm
Sing
: 2nd and 3rd Sundays at the 9:00 Eucharist and some Holy Days

If you have ever had the inclination or felt the calling to sing in a choir, this is the opportunity for you! The mission of the All Souls Choir is to provide musical leadership at the 9:00am Eucharist. This choir sings choral literature from all periods, and is joined once a month by the St. Cecilia Youth Choristers. On occasion, the All Souls Coir combines with the Cathedral Choir to sing such services as Advent Lessons and Carols and Taizé liturgies.

St. Cecilia Choir

Boys and girls in grades 3 through high school are welcome.
Rehearsals: Wednesday afternoons from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.
Sing: Sunday mornings primarily at the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist (occasionally at 11:15).

Rehearsals consist of anthem learning, hymn singing, liturgy training, and all around fun! Choristers explore the rich heritage of musical styles in the Episcopal Church, examine the various symbols and traditions of the liturgical year, and learn how to participate more confidently in the worship of their church. The St. Cecilia Choir will occasionally be joined by members of the Cathedral Choir to sing four-part music!

St. Nicholas Choir

Boys and girls in grades 1 and 2 are welcome.
Rehearsals: Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m.
Sing: Sunday mornings primarily at the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist.

The half-hour rehearsals consist of voice building and note reading exercises. Through musical games and echo-singing, choristers build musical confidence and "find their voice." The St. Nicholas Choir learns music by rote and sings from memory. As a result, choristers are not expected to be able to read music or words. The goal of the St. Nicholas Choir is to prepare choristers to participate fully in the worship of the church, and to move confidently into the St. Cecilia Choir.

The Organ

The chancel organ, installed in 1971 by the Casavant Organ Company of Canada, is composed of three manual divisions and pedal. The older antiphonal organ over the front door contains a composite of older pipe work including a four-foot flute rank saved from the original 1896 Geo. S. Hutchings Organ. The chancel and antiphonal organs together comprise fifty five ranks with almost three thousand pipes in six divisions--all controlled from the recently restored and updated three manual console located in the chancel.
