Discples of Christ in Community Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ overview

What is DOCC?

DOCC (pronounced “Dock”) is a major adult education course that meets for twenty-two sessions during an academic year.  DOCC covers the “basics” of Christian faith.  It covers themes such as “Becoming the Church,” “Biblical Faith,” “Love,” and “Salvation.”  Participants become part of a caring, accepting community.

How does DOCC work?

DOCC meets each Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00, with appropriate holidays off (consult the schedule).

The first 45 minutes or so will consist of a presentation by Jim Pritchett.  Participants then break into small groups of 8-10 lead by trained facilitators.  You will meet with the same small group all year.  In the small  groups, participants primarily discuss how the subject of the presentation is relevant to their lives.  Small groups practice active, non-judgmental listening, and group meetings are confidential.

How long does DOCC last?

DOCC lasts about twenty-two sessions.  Please consult the schedule and your calendar to be sure you can participate.

What background do I need to participate?

DOCC covers the basics of the Christian faith.  It will be enlightening to those who are new to the faith and a good refresher to more seasoned hands.  You do not need any particular background to participate.

What kind of commitment is expected of me if I participate?

That is a very important question.  No “homework” is required, but we emphasize a strong commitment to attend weekly meetings.  As a rule of thumb, you should not participate if you know you will have more than  three absences during the course of the program, and we must be notified in advance of an absence.  The small groups are the heart of the program, and their success depends on their integrity and continuity.  You can record the presentation, but there is no way to make up for not being present in the group. You will be asked to sign a “Covenant” when you register.  Please read it carefully and prayerfully consider whether you can and should participate.  It is a serious commitment, but it will be worth it!

Will childcare be available?

Whether childcare is available will depend on the needs of the participants.  Participants who need childcare can pool their resources.

Can I bring a spouse or partner?

Couples are welcome to participate in the program, but spouses and partners will not be placed in the same small group.  The DOCC program has learned from experience that placing spouses or partners in the same small group can create a “sub-group” which is detrimental to the life of the small group.

Is space limited?

It may be.  We’ll see!  We are limited by the number of trained facilitators.  If you know you want to participate, please register early.  Thanks!

How do I register and what is the cost?

Please read the accompanying Covenant and Registration form.  Fill it out and send it to the church marked “attention: DOCC” with your check for $     (to cover the cost of materials) made payable to The Cathedral of All Souls.  Please put “DOCC” on the check.  Scholarships are available by calling Jim
Pritchett (828) 225-6656.

What if we don’t have a DOCC program this year?

We must have enough people for two small groups for DOCC to “make.”  If we don’t have a DOCC program this year, your money will be refunded.

What if I have more questions?
