DOCC Frequently Asked Questions
DOCC is both a comprehensive Christian Education experience (teaching about many aspects of the faith) and an intense small group experience.
It will be offered on Wednesday nights beginning October 1 and running through April, with appropriate breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.
DOCC will be presented by the Rev. Canon Jim Pritchett, Canon to the Ordinary in our diocese.
Many of you know Jim. He attends All Souls when he is not visiting parishes as part of his duties, and his wife (Charlotte) and daughter (Elizabeth) attend regularly. Jim has presented DOCC five times as a parish priest and has presented at national training events twice. “I love DOCC,” he says. “It’s a big commitment for me, but it’s good for my soul, and seeing how it affects people reminds me that God is alive and well and working in and through our relationships with one another.”
Here’s how DOCC works.
Participants gather for a presentation by Jim. The presentations last about 30 minutes and cover a wide variety of topics related to the faith, such as prayer, scripture, love, sin, the kingdom of God, and many more. Presentations are not Bible study per se, but are deeply rooted in biblical theology. And there is no homework!
After the presentation, participants meet in small groups of about 8-10 for an hour. Participants are in the same small group each week, so you will get to know those folks very well! The purpose of the small group is to discuss how the subject of the presentation affects the lives of the participants. No experience or training is required, and academic or theoretical discussions are counterproductive. What is said in the small groups is kept in confidence.
Each small group has two trained facilitators. Their job is to ensure that the process stays on track by making sure that everyone gets a chance to speak, the group stays on topic, conversations are personal rather than academic, etc.
The small group experience is the heart of DOCC. “I have seen DOCC change many lives,” says Jim Pritchett. “Not only do people come to a new or more comprehensive understanding of the faith, but they establish relationships in the small groups that usually last a lifetime.”
In June, Jim presented the DOCC program at the Christian Formation Conference at Kanuga. Four All Souls folks received the training to be small group facilitators: Rob Newcomer, Don Neblett, Carla Schell, and Virginia Teel. “These folks are just great!” Jim says. “I’m so excited
about working with them!”
Space is limited! Because we have four trained facilitators (enough for two small groups), we can only accept 16 participants.
DOCC costs $55.00. Scholarships are available. We are unable to provide childcare, but will be happy to connect participants who might want to pool resources for that purpose. To register for DOCC, fill out the Registration Form. You can get it at church, or you can download it from the Cathedral’s website. You may also pick up or download the schedule (which you should consult before signing up). You may also contact Jim Pritchett at jimpritchett@diocesewnc.org or 225-6656.
