2010 God's Loving Hands Awards
Up one levelIn preparation for the 2010 God’s Loving Hands Award, a yearly recognition of the life-time contributions made to All Souls by individuals, Kerstin McDaniel suggested a gift that would make a tangible and permanent addition to our Richard Morris Hunt worship space—Kneelers! The suggestion was readily embraced by the committee chaired by Wade Saunders and the work began resulting in eight new kneelers. The honorees for the 2010 God’s Loving Hands Award were: Millie Elmore, David Fortney, Martha Fullington, Margaret McKeel, Carey Caperton Owen, Suzzy Sams, Mike and Susan Stevenson.
Millie Elmore
Millie Elmore is remembered for her many contributions to All Souls and for her great love of gardening. The kneeler showing flowers and birds was designed and stitched by Kerstin McDaniel.
David Fortney
David Fortney is recognized for his musical gifts and caretaking as well as his love of the All Souls stained glass windows of David Maitland Armstrong and his daughter Helen Maitland Armstrong. His kneeler based on the central apse window shows peacocks—symbols of the resurrection and immortality—was designed and worked by Kerstin McDaniel.
Martha Fullington
Martha Fullington is remembered for her work as architectural historian and in particular her great love and fierce protection of our very own architectural heritage. The kneeler is loosely based on a stained glass window and worked by Ted Ahl.
Margaret McKeel
Margaret McKeel’s contributions to All Souls are many a varied but it is her service as crucifer and principal server which is recalled by her kneeler presenting images of the Cross, wheat and grapes, elements of the Eucharist. The kneeler was designed by Kerstin McDaniel and worked by Ted Ahl.
Carey Caperton Owen
Carey Caperton Owen is lovingly remembered for her many contributions to All Souls in a kneeler which evokes the beauty of the mountains and a field of flowers along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The design is by Julie Thompson and worked by Ted Ahl.
Suzzy Sams
Suzzy Sams’ life, work and great love of the arts and travel in Italy is recalled by a kneeler based on one of the great Ravenna mosaics. The kneelers was designed by Kerstin McDaniel and worked by Julie Thompson.
Mike Stevenson
Mike and Susan Stevenson are remembered for their myriad of contributions and love of All Souls in matching kneelers with a myriad of colors. The design and work are by Kerstin McDaniel.
