The Magic of Art benefit workshop

Our children have a unique and wonderful opportunity with the program offered below. Margaret Harvey is a beloved and long-time All Souls parishioner who has positively influenced so many young people with her "art encouragement." All proceeds from this program will benefit Arts for Life.

Date: Sep 11, 2010
Time: 10:00 am - 03:00 pm

Location: Parish Hall

Margaret Harvey, a member of All Souls parish, and her friend, Mimi Shackelford, will teach a one-day workshop, “The Magic of Art,” in the All Souls parish hall from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. The workshop, for church school and classroom teachers, parents, grandparents, scout leaders and others, is designed to provide ways to stimulate the creativity and imaginations of children through art activities.

All the proceeds from the event will benefit Arts for Life, a non-profit dedicated to improving the lives and health care experiences of young patients through art, music and creative writing.

Participants will have opportunities to experiment and discover things to do with paper, glue, scissors, paint and imagination. Those who attend will make puppets and dragons; turn recyclables into hats; turn stories, themes and experiences into art; and learn how to provide inspiration in arts experiences for children.

“Children don’t need to be taught how to draw, they just need to have someone to help them get started,” said Harvey, who resists the title of art “teacher.” She considers herself more of a facilitator or someone who “jump starts” children into art projects. Harvey taught art classes in her log cabin studio in Arden for years and nurtured several artists in their early years who have gone on to become nationally recognized artists and others who have made all or part of their living through artistic endeavors.

Shackelford has taught many arts workshops for children and adults and was an exhibit designer for The Health Adventure for many years.

Cost of the workshop will be $50 plus $10 for supplies. Participants should bring their own lunches. Beverages will be provided.

To register, call Shackelford at 254-9702 or Harvey at 684-3947
