Church of the Advocate this Sunday

The idea was birthed by The Reverends Judith Whelchel and Bill Jamieson of All Souls on Christmas Eve 1997. In March of 1998 Church of the Advocate, a worshiping community for persons living on the streets of Asheville, came into being in Pritchard Park.

For the past eleven years The Advocate has been a community offering refuge for those who are without homes, those with homes and those who sometimes have called themselves 'home free' (meaning not bound by a home).  They have held art shows in the parish hall of All Souls, have produced and sold a CD through an obtained grant and have sent a work crew to assist Katrina recovery.  It has been a haven for many 'lost to purpose and to meaning scarcely caring where they go..' Hymnal 1982 #580

It was while Judith and Bill were conducting a service of worship and dinner at a local shelter on Christmas Eve 1997 that they heard in the voices of those gathered a hunger for a spiritual community where they would not feel self-conscious about their acute chapter of life.  With the learning and encouragement of the Common Cathedral community of Boston Common, the vision for this work came forth.   Trinity Episcopal downtown offered their undercroft and now oversees this gathering of the faithful.  They are recognized as members of this diocese participating in annual convention and all other gatherings.

This Sunday morning during the Adult Forum, The Reverend Ham Fuller, Vicar of The Advocate, will join us to discuss their continued growth and future vision.  I encourage you to join him as he offers to us the ways in which God is leading this community.

A home birthed on Christmas Eve for those with no place to lay their head: truly a place of Jesus.

Peace,

Todd Donatelli
