Changing the World One Household at a Time
Standing inside the future home of Rodrick and Yelena Scott, the 8th Asheville Episcopal Deanery Habitat construct, I pondered the old axiom, "you can't change the world today, but you can make a dent."
It is one of the last of 54 homes being built in the Enka Habitat subdivision. After two and a half years of home construction in this neighborhood, Habitat will move to its next of three areas of land purchased several years ago. Among these streets are homes with individual architectural character, individual plantings and home decor.
The human statistics of home ownership are striking: rates of children school completion and other measures of familial and communal social stability are greatly impacted. These homes are changing individuals and a community. There is no charity here, no 'we are giving you'. All involved from the homeowners requirement of 200 hours of prior construction work to those helping to build participate in a pact of mutually offered human dignity.
In a season marked by Thanksgiving holiday, there is much here for which to give thanks. I am grateful for the coordinating efforts of Bill Doyle and for all who have been able to work on this home. It is a means of self offering whose life will continue for years to come.
Construction will be complete in about three weeks according to Rob, the Habitat foreman of this house. There will be a blessing and welcome celebration with Rodrick, Yelena and their son once they have moved in. This will be more than celebrating house construction. It will be participation in the creation of household.
Peace,
Todd Donatelli
