Obama, Beer, Da Bulls and Hope
I think a picture of our President suggests part of the path to hope.
It is a picture of the President watching the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards play basketball. I love not only that our President knows how to relax (and that he cheers for da Bulls), but the body and expression of the kid next to him- relaxed, just one more person at the game.
There is great need for play, for the frivolous in our lives; times where we are not preoccupied with the 'deep things' of life. Times where our souls/minds/muscles simply relax and enjoy. We know from things measurable it is essential for our physical well being and much suggests its import for our minds/souls. I think it essential if we are to see as God sees.
I have glanced this morning our President's speech in Cairo, Egypt addressing America and Islam, and the desire of all nations living together in hope and dignity. The news wires may already be filled with shouts of victory and vitriol, depending where you stand on various issues.
What I appreciate about our President is his willingness to speak of the virtues and vices of all involved in any issue. From his speech on race to his speech in Europe a couple of months ago (where he challenged both Americans and Europeans on respective 'unhelpful' behaviors as well as naming their respective virtues) to this speech today, we hear accountability, responsibility and ways of hope. We also hear laughter. I believe his sight is shaped in part by his frivolity.
I think the only way to avoid polarization is frivolity. Only from our lightness can we truly, in life giving ways, approach the serious. Only as we practice 'lightness' are we helpful when engaging the 'heavy' matters of life.
One of the primary marks of the Spirit's manifestation in the Book of Acts is joy. For Luke it is the indispensable marker of the Spirit's presence. May we in this season after Pentecost practice lightness, play, and frivolity. For without it we will never be relaxed enough to see as God sees.
Peace,
