Tuesday in Holy Week: We've come too far to turn back now
A phrase voiced by people of many generations which seems to be on Jesus' lips today.
Jesus hears that Greeks have come to his disciples with the request, "We wish to see Jesus." He understands the significance of this appeal. It proclaims people of all races are hearing God's calling to them, people of all races are seeing the light of God. It is a sign of the kingdom, the full life of God, breaking into this world. Jesus understands.
Juxtaposed to the light of this revelation, the reality of God's light being seen by people of all races, is the reality of darkness also crashing in. It is a darkness of those who would put out the light of Jesus. Holy Week is nothing if not a continuous journey of juxtaposition: light/dark, hope/despair, fidelity/infidelity, courageousness/cowardice, death/life. All of these will be seen in bold, vivid contrast.
"The hour has come...' is his reply. "...unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains a single grain, but if it dies, it bears much fruit." He is aware that light is breaking in and darkness is marshaling its power as well. Will he hold back? Will he leave Jerusalem for a more safe environment, one hospitable to his life, his word?
"Whoever serves me must follow me." The hour is growing darker, and, Jesus has come too far to turn back now. We are invited to continue with him.
Blessed Tuesday in Holy Week,
