Keeping the Flame Alive

"What they must have are: inner mastery; a central, compelling purpose rooted in moral values; a capacity to persuade; skills in working within the system; a fast start; a strong, effective team; and a passion that inspires others to keep the flame alive." - David Gergen, Eyewitness to Power

I am about played out with political pundits.  I feel as if for the past several months I have overindulged at the 'smorgasbord' of political news.  I know the news channels will have their own version of a recession about three days after the election in November (time to tell us all what happened- or perhaps they are praying for another Florida situation to drag this out) when folks won't be watching as much as they have during the primaries and general election.

And when I just can't help myself and need some comment, I find myself seeking out David Gergen.  He seems to be about the only pundit who has not prepared his answer before hearing the question.

The quote above comes from his book about leadership where he reflects upon the same via his service to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton.  I am drawn to his description not only as for a leader, but as a description of what a community of faith might be.

Inner Mastery: "What the world needs now, is regulation, sweet regulation..." (Sorry Burt).  The capacity for inner mastery, inner regulation, inner reflectiveness, 'if you can keep your cool while others around you are losing theirs...', a capacity to consider what actions bring life to all.  What does it take for a community to have inner mastery?

A central compelling purpose rooted in moral values- enough said.

Working within the system: it is easy to cast stones from afar.  Real relationship involves vulnerability, disappointment, making mistakes, showing your derriere at times, and it leads to the holy experience of soul community, connection that is beyond words, something only possible when we cares enough to engage without reservation those around us- then we find ourselves standing on the sacred ground of transformation.

A passion that inspires others to keep the flame alive.  I think of those who have kindled and fed the flame inside of me and inside of this community.  What does it take for a community to live out its passion?  It is certainly not a safe play- It means being clear about what is your core, what it is without which you would not survive- what brings passionate life, not simply amusement.

Mastery, roots, connectedness and passion.  Signs of life.

Peace,

Todd
