Watching the color change

I have come to love watching the green of the mountain trees make its way through crooks and up the elevations during this time of year. It is a several week trek whose show reminds me of how life courses where and as it will. read more...

"Pray for me."

Sitting in Christ Cathedral, New Orleans on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Becky and I listened to a concert of spirituals offered by trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and a host of his musical friends. One of the most significant moments for me was a hymn whose lyrics include the phrase, "Pray for me." What effect might it have on our souls and on the soul of the world if this were part of our regular salutations to one another? read more...

Good Friday

Amen." Collect for Good Friday, Book of Common Prayer 1976 read more...

Maundy Thursday: The towel

The Golden Bear Pancake House could be considered an upscale IHOP. In addition to killer pancakes, waffles and omelets, you could get burgers, steaks, salads and some remarkable deserts. I was the busboy who made certain your table had no stray drops of syrup from a prior customer. read more...

The Words We Choose

"I'm goin down ta da Stadium ta see da Bulls." Ditka. Butkus. These were among the listings of a recent email sent to me about how to speak 'Chicago'. If you need to communicate to a Chicagoan, it is advisable to add as many t's and d's to your words as possible. read more...

The Cultivation of Life in this Diocese

"Love me enough to argue with me." A quote from an old friend who does much teaching and consulting in the Episcopal Church. Her sense was that if we truly loved each other as individuals and in community, we would be able to move beyond surface niceties in order to develop true intimacy. A willingness to trust each other with our deepest passions was a sign of our care about one another. read more...

The Power of Remembering

All Saints/All Souls Day: For the past half dozen year we have been placing in front of the altar pictures of those who have died during the past year. Interspersed with them are icons of other saints. Each year I find myself drawn to the images and realize that those who have died this past year become new icons- images that take me to a reality beyond themselves. read more...
