The mission of the Cathedral Arts Commission is to further the ministry of the Cathedral of All Souls by selecting, sponsoring, encouraging, and producing events in the literary, visual, or performing arts which enrich the cultural or spiritual life of our community. To this end, our goal is to promote 3 to 4 events per year.
From the 2016 Annual Report:
2016 began with our very popular New Year’s Day Concert of organ and brass featuring the Appalachian Brass and our own Kyle Ritter on organ. Our ‘main event’ this year was the screening of the critically acclaimed film “Robert Shaw – Man of Many Voices”. This was a first for us in that we collaborated with the Fine Arts Theater in downtown Asheville in order to provide a suitable venue for the event. Thanks to the efforts of Commission members Janis Bryant and Carol Anders the event was very well attended and came off without a hitch. We look forward to sponsoring more events like this in the future.
This year we were also proud to support soprano and former choir member Derin Togar in a recital of opera arias. Derin surprised us all by recognizing her former teachers Janis Bryant and Gary Mitchell with a scholarship fund!
As we look forward to 2017 we already have a couple of events in the works. The spring will bring the renowned Cheah Chan Duo featuring sopranist and baritone Phillip Cheah and pianist Trudy Tong Ti Chan. They present “uniquely curated programs using art songs and piano works to bring greater cultural and social awareness to their audience.” We also look forward to the return of author Wiley Cash whose new novel will be out soon!
